The card reads "2007 Let's Make Happen!" and features a monthly calendar for the year. Charlie circled October, when he undoubtedly hopes the Phillies still will be playing. Along the bottom, there's a vintage quote from Yogi Berra: "It's never happened in World Series history - and it hasn't happened since."

Dec. 22 -- HAPPY HOLIDAYS, FROM CHARLIE MANUEL

I don't even get it.
Paul: The quote or the meaning of the card? The quote isn't supposed to make sense. It's a Yogi-ism, like "It ain't over til it's over" or "When you see a fork in the road, take it." The card? I think it reveals Charlie Manuel's state-of-mind right now, which, quite simply, is exactly what it should be -- winning a World Series in 2007. I just find it amusing that it's reflected in the theme of his holiday card.
I got the Yogi-ism, (even if it's a yogi-ism,) but it was the card i didn't get.
Good piece on Coste today, but some of his quotes could be read as self centered, don't you think?
Not that I feel that way at all about him, just saying.
Thanks, Paul. There's no question some of Coste's comments were self-centered, but he definitely wasn't putting himself ahead of the team. It stands to reason he thinks the Phils would be better if he's on the roster (if he doesn't think that, he should retire). So, I think he was just making an honest sales pitch for why he should be there.
Personally, I don't think Coste is entitled to anything after one good season in the majors. But, for a lot of players, what Coste did in '06 would be enough to guarantee them a spot heading into spring training. The spot would be theirs to lose. I'm not even sure Coste has that much security.
With Gillick in charge, the only one safe is Gillick.
