As I suspected he might, Chase Utley underwent surgery this morning. Evidently, the procedure, which took only 20 minutes and was performed by hand specialist Dr. Randall Culp, is designed to set the bones and speed the healing process. The Phillies have set Utley's recovery time at "up to four weeks."Also, the Phillies have purchased the contract of veteran minor-league infielder Joe Thurston from triple-A Ottawa. Thurston, 27, was batting a combined .278 with three home runs and 44 RBI in 105 games between double-A Reading and Ottawa.
What, only two comments on whether the Phillies can stay in the race without Utley? C'mon, people! I know there are more opinions than that.

well, i am still a believer even though it is a devestating blow...their offense will still be potent with howard and rollins...bullpen much better with gordon and myers back....they just need to stay afloat for a late august and september run when utley returns.
btw, enjoy your blog and column.
do you think they will make a short-term move for a 2B like Grudzielanek or Loretta? can either of those players help?

I guess we'll just have to wait and see. The offense is so potent that I think it can get along pretty well without Utley (it's still a very damaging injury though). The most painful aspect of the last game was the bullpen losing it again. Bullpen help is what we need before the deadline.
..and instead of bullpen help we get Tadahito Iguchi.
