As I watched Ryan Howard slug yet another home run today, I decided to raise this question to Phillies fans:
Who would you rather have playing first base, Howard or Jim Thome?
Here are the pertinent, and eerily similar, stats for both (through Sunday):
THOME -- .292 AVG, 41 R, 49 H, 18 HR, 44 BI, 37 BB, 51 K, .424 OBP, .649 SLG
HOWARD -- .307 AVG, 28 R, 54 H, 17 HR, 44 BI, 17 BB, 46 K, .364 OBP, .619 SLG

To me the answer is simple, Ryan Howard. He's almost ten years younger and so far in his career seems to come through in the clutch. He also has center field and opposite field power which Thome doesn't. But it's an unfair comparison because Thome has yet to play a game at 1st base this year. So that makes the case even stronger for Howard.
I would agree. There is no contest. Ryan Howard should be the man.
I wouldn't say Thome doesn't have center or opposite field power, though.
Howard is good enough to cut down on his strike outs. But his ability to hit line drives to any part of the field puts howard well above Thome anyday.
Ten years younger no brainer.
