Aug. 16 -- DALLAS VS. CHARLIE

As you may have read in today's News Journal, Charlie Manuel approached Dallas Green on the field after batting practice Tuesday and gave him a red-faced, finger-waving, tongue-lashing. I was standing a few feet away and found the whole incident, well, rather amusing. So did several high-ranking members of the Phillies organization, who heard about it afterward.

Bottom line is this: Green, a Newport native and manager of the only Phillies team to win a World Series, is nothing if not outspoken. And, a few weeks ago, Green went on a local radio station and second-guessed Manuel for some of the moves he's made. Manuel, who can be sensitive about such things (wouldn't you be?), had been waiting to see Green and confront him. He got his chance Tuesday.

So, here's my question: If we set up a steel cage at Citizens Bank Park, who would win in a fight: Dallas or Chuck? To help make your decision, here's a tale of the tape for what definitely would be a heavyweight bout.

Dallas / Charlie
72 years old / 62 years old
6-foot-5 / 6-foot-4
throws left / throws right

Who cares. Point is Manuel has made some pretty suspicious moves late in games lately. Not sending runners on counts to avoid double plays. Is it not obvious that Utley is striking out alot lately? Why is nobody telling him all of MLB has figured out he never swings at a first pitch?
Manuel is missing some obvious baseball 101 moves lately. But they are still in the wild card race. That means he will be around for another year.

Anonymous: Charlie's objection to Dallas had to do with exactly the sort of things you're talking about, so I'm glad you shifted the discussion to Charlie's managerial skills.

Say what you will (and many people think Charlie is better suited as a hitting coach than a manager), I'm not sure he makes that many more strategical errors than most other managers. Double plays haven't exactly killed the Phils lately, and Utley's reluctance to swing at first pitches hasn't drastically raised his strikeout totals.

Bottom line: the Phils are winning again, and a lot of that has to do with the relaxed mood and feeling of confidence Charlie has inspired in the clubhouse. Lately, he's had the Midas touch with making out his lineup, too. On Tuesday, he started Victorino and Dellucci (and benched Met-killer Pat Burrell). Lo and behold, they both homered in the first inning.

Charlie should -- and he probably will -- get credit for all of that. He has gone from being listed high on everyone list of managers most likely to be fired to the guy most likely to be leading this team next season.

Is that a just reward? What do you think?

On the wrestling point ... a lot of poeple don't know that former WWF star (i refuse to call it WWE) George "The Animal" Steele graduated Michigan State with a science degree. This, from a man who used to paint his tongue green and eat the turnbuckle.

You think Dallas and Chuckles could beat Steele in an intelligence battle?

manuel is a moron, the phils are winning 13-0 in the 7th and 8th inn vs the Mets last week. So why is Cole Hamels on the mound, O.K, maybe to give the youngster a CG shutout for his rookie resume. Nope he sits in the 9th. Why was Hamels on the hill in the 7th and 8th..b/c old time Charlie is a moron. but i guess he really shouldnt care about the phils future b/c he is not going to be a part of it

Hamels pitch count was low and the bull pen is very weak right now. That was the right move. Yes Manuel has had the Midas touch lately but they lose again today.

I still believe watching Utley he is striking out alot more lately. It has everything to do with not being able to deal with the inside pitch with two strikes. Teams have figured it out. Get ahead with the first pitch then inside, inside , inside. He may be getting on base but how long has he been stuck on 21 homers? How many balls is he driving in the gaps right now? He is becoming a dead pull hitter all b/c they are pounding him inside. That being said he will still get his hits b/c he is that good.

As far as my assertion Manuel misses opportunities just watch especially in close games.
