Just spoke to GM Pat Gillick, who said he "really can't comment" on the LA Times report that the Phillies have signed 39-year-old reliever Rudy Seanez to a major-league contract. Of course, Gillick didn't deny it either, which likely means Seanez will join the Phillies but the deal hasn't been finalized. Chances are, he still has to pass a physical. The Phillies don't have to make a roster move until Seanez is signed, although the end of Wes Helms' tenure with the club may be near.Gillick did say, however, that the Phillies are "not interested at all" in veteran relievers Mike Stanton or Steve Kline. So, there's that.

Depends which Seanez shows up. The one from last year might make this a top bullpen. Chad Durbin had a 4.32 ERA in the American League last year, and Ryan Madson had an ERA slightly over 3. So if you get last year's Seanez, you'd be adding 3 guys w/sub 4.32 ERAs to last year's setup duo of Gordon and Romero, and new closer Brad Lidge. That's a pretty deep pen. But if you get this spring's Seanez, who had an ERA just short of 8, then the signing obviously doesn't help at all.
