Sept. 23 -- READER POLL: WHO'S YOUR MVP?

BY SCOTT LAUBER

On Saturday, before the Phillies face the Nationals here at the Bank, our chapter of the Baseball Writers' Association of America will present our annual end-of-season awards. Among them, as always, will be the team MVP award. Personally, I had a tough time selecting an MVP, so I'm going to ask you: If you had to choose, who would you vote for?

a) Ryan Howard
b) Brad Lidge
c) Jamie Moyer
d) Jimmy Rollins
e) Chase Utley
f) Other

Ryan Howard. Period.

The surprise second place finisher? Jayson Werth.

Imagine a Jenkins/Taguchi platoon in right without Werth. Then picture those two sitting while Dobbs eventually moved to right and learned defense on-the-job.

Victorino has good speed, but he couldn't cover everything between Burrell and Dobbs. And to trade for a right-handed stick to play every day would have mortgaged a huge chunk of the team's future.

Werth's defense isn't Gold Glove, but he's no slouch and allows Victorino to cheat over toward left, helping the pitchers. He steals bases. He hits for average and power while eschewing the double play ball. And at a time the team was wound tight as a drum, he broke the tension as "J. Dos Ocho".

Howard's your MVP. But I sure as hell wouldn't have wanted to go to war this year without Jayson Werth!

Brad Lidge.

What has been the big difference between the Mets and Phillies this year? The bullpen. And that all starts with your closer. If you don't have a closer, everybody loses their clearly defined roles and chaos ensues (see Mets, Billy Wagner).

Yeah, Ryan Howard has been awesome this past month and a half, Jimmy too. Chase and Pat were the catalyst for the first half of the season.

You need different guys to carry you through stretches of the season. However, Brad Lidge has carried this team the ENTIRE season, and that is what defines a MVP.

A) Ryan Howard end of story.

Howard's offense can't be overlooked, but neither can playing eight inning games every night.

Both players should have steak dinners in their locker after each game, courtesy of Gillick and the Rube.

LIDGE-end of story.

Howards is playing just as well these last two months as Utley and Burrell played the first two months. Only Lidge gas been consistently great. 40/40 in saves - how can u argue against perfection!
