Oct. 1 -- AMARO ON EATON

BY SCOTT LAUBER

Nobody expected Adam Eaton to make the Phillies' playoff roster. But why, exactly, is Eaton, who made $7.635 million this season and is due to make $8.5 million next year, watching the playoffs from home when other non-roster players are either with the team (Rudy Seanez) or staying sharp by playing in the Florida Instructional League (Kyle Kendrick, Greg Golson)?

"In talking to our staff and coaches we decided that Adam can't help us in the playoffs," assistant GM Ruben Amaro Jr. said. "Kyle can help us so he went to Clearwater. We just don't feel that Adam could help us."

So, there's that.

In case you missed it, today's News Journal was chock full o' Phillies.

There's a cover story on the "Pen Men," the seven Phillies relievers who make up the best bullpen in the National League; Martin Frank's column about the wonder that is CC Sabathia; a sidebar on Jimmy Rollins, who has some vivid October memories; a jam-packed notebook that discusses J.A. Happ's place on the postseason roster, Pat Burrell's back, Ryan Howard's defense and more; a look at the top 10 moments of the Phillies' season; a look at how the Brewers and Phillies match up; a look at how Philly (as a city) matches up against Milwaukee (as a city); Kevin Noonan's match up of the 2008 Phillies against the teams of the '80s and '90s; the story behind the Archmere choir performing the Star-Spangled Banner before Game 1.
