Oct. 1 -- THE STORM BEFORE THE STORM

By CHRISTOPHER YASIEJKO

It's 20 minutes before the first pitch, and the players have lined up along the first- and third- base lines for introductions and the national anthem. The fans, who haven't yet filled the sold-out park, are loud, frantic, waving their small white towels, awash in red clothing.

Members of Archmere Academy's choir just sang the national anthem. They sounded smooth, crisp, taking only slight artistic liberties. When they reached the phrase, "the bombs bursting in air," fireworks exploded overhead, momentarily drowning out the singers.

The skyline has grown a bit hazy, but if rain delays any part of this game, the 45,000-plus towels here will come in handy.
