Oct. 1 -- HAMELS OUT, LIDGE IN

BY SCOTT LAUBER

So, Cole Hamels' day is done, but what a day it was.

Hamels, making his second career playoff start, yielded only two hits and a walk, allowed just one runner to reach second base and struck out nine. He threw 101 pitches, and after cruising through the seventh and eighth innings, there's no reason he couldn't have pitched the ninth.

Well, except, of course, that the Phillies have Brad Lidge.

Mr. Perfect was 41-for-41 during the regular season, and his theme song, "Soldiers" by Drowning Pool, is blaring as he enters for the ninth. Can he protect a 3-0 lead against the top of the Brewers' lineup? Bet on it.
