Dec. 7 -- ALL OVER

The lobby of the Swan & Dolphin is nearly empty now with most team executives, including those from the Phillies, having left for the airport. No other news from the Phillies camp today and I've been told probably not tomorrow, either. They're still euphoric over the Freddy Garcia trade.

So, what do you think? Any opinions out there on whether it was a good move?

I LOVE the Garcia trade because we basically traded Thome, Floyd, and cash for Garcia, Rowand and Castro. Also, what do you think of a longshot chance of dealing for Vernon Wells? Would you think Myers, Rowand, and Segovia would get it done and would it be beneficial for the Phils?
Thanks for the updates all week, it's been fun checking in every day for your great info, keep up the good work!

Hi, Ed.

Last week, and again today before the meetings wrapped up, I asked some Jays people about Wells. Right now, they'd consider trading him, but they're looking for a big return. One of their greatest needs, even after signing Royce Clayton, is a shortstop, and the Phils see Jimmy Rollins as virtually untouchable.

Also, the Jays have talked about trying to sign Wells to a three-year contract extension, and since they've struck out on getting a big-time free-agent pitcher, they may have the cash to do that.

Personally, as much as Wells would help the Phillies, I think they have to be wary of trading a young and still relatively inexpensive pitcher like Myers. You see the contracts that lesser pitchers (Lilly, Meche, etc.) are getting on the open market, and you realize how much of a bargain Myers and especially Hamels are right now. At this point, I'd hold off, but I think you're on the right track here. Any deal for Wells will have to start with a guy like Myers.

What do you think?

Thanks for the compliments, and please keep reading!

I see no reason to make a move that includes Myers for Wells. His numbers are slightly better than Burrell's but giving up that arm for Wells essentailly to replace Burrell is not worth it.
