Jan. 6 -- KING CARLOS

The latest issue of Baseball America arrived in my mailbox today, and it features the top-10 prospects for each NL East team. Here's the Phillies list, headed by 19-year-old right-handed pitcher Carlos Carrasco (left). I've also listed the level(s) at which they played last season.

1. Carrasco (low-A)
2. Kyle Drabek, LHP (rookie)
3. Adrian Cardenas, 2B (rookie)
4. Edgar Garcia, RHP (short-season-A)
5. Scott Mathieson, RHP (double-A, triple-A, majors)
6. Josh Outman, LHP (low-A)
7. Michael Bourn, OF (double-A, triple-A, majors)
8. J.A. Happ, LHP (high-A, double-A, triple-A)
9. Matt Maloney, LHP (low-A)
10. Greg Golson, OF (low-A, high-A)

Note: Seven of the 10 are pitchers (four of those seven are lefties)... Except for Mathieson, Bourn and Happ, all are low-level minor leaguers. ... Mathieson will be out for most of the 2007 season after undergoing Tommy John elbow surgery in September.

Expect Drabek, Cardenas, and Edgar Garcia to play for low A Lakewood. That means the number 2,3, and 4 prospects of the Phillies can be seen playing the Delmarva Shorebirds in Salisbury this season. At the beach? Drive over to Salisbury and see these guys live.

Karl: Minor-league assignments won't be made until spring training, but I think you'll be correct. Cardenas played well enough after the draft to merit a promotion to Lakewood, and the Phillies undoubtedly want Drabek and Garcia to pitch for full-season teams. For anyone interested, Lakewood plays at Delmarva on April 24-26, May 17-20, June 7-10 and July 7-9.

Scott - Is there any truth to the rumors of signing Karim Garcia or Hollandsworth to minor league deals?

Paul: From what I understand, Todd Hollandsworth is a possibility. I haven't heard anything about Karim Garcia. Personally, I think Hollandsworth would stand a better chance of contributing as a lefty-hitting outfielder off the bench.

If you consider a .246 avg, .275 obp, 7 homers and 35 rbi's a contribution, we may as well be talking about which team we're going to finish behind in the wild card.

I hate being negative, and don't want to be, but how can I not? What type of signing would Hollandsworth be? Ho-hum. He hasn't had a decent year in about 4 seasons, and if you take a look at his numbers, theyve steadily declined over that period. He's filler, a Conine doppleganger that makes you wonder why we even traded Conine in the first place.
Take this outfield, bullpen, and now aging bench and you have the same makeup as last year, or possibly worse.

OF:

2006: Burrell/Rowand/Abreu/Dellucci/ Victorino

2007: Burrell/Rowand/Victorino/Werth/ Hollandsworth

This has nothing to do with King Carlos, but can you tell me who the eight knuckleheads are who didn't vote for Cal Ripken for the Hall of Fame? And why? It's just pure baloney that they think because Babe Ruth didn't get 100 percent of the votes, or whoever, that no one else will, too.

I cannot for the life of me think of one compelling reason why Ripken shouldn't have been named on all of the ballots. And don't bring up character. That didn't stop Ty Cobb or any number of louts from being honored for their baseball achievements.

Just call them eight men out -- and I'm almost positive they're all crusty men who think they're protecting something in America's game. Ha! Their memberships should be revoked.

Plus, why should writers and broadcasters be making news -- by selecting Hall of Fame classes -- instead of reporting it?
