Feb. 1 -- DELAWARE UPDATE

* Talked to Brewers GM Doug Melvin on the phone earlier today, and near the end of our conversation, the subject of Kevin Mench (right) came up. The Brewers weren't happy with how the Newark native and UD grad played after they acquired him last July in the Carlos Lee trade. But Melvin, who was the GM in Texas during part of Mench's tenure there, believes Mench was distracted by off-the-field matters after the trade, like moving to Milwaukee while he was building a home in Texas.

Interestingly, Melvin compared Mench to Eric Byrnes, the outfielder who was awful after being traded twice in 2005 but rebounded last year with a career-high 26 homers and 79 RBIs for Arizona.

"We're hoping he can bounce back," Melvin said of Mench. "I've seen Kevin enough in Texas to know he's a talented player. He has to stay focused on what his job is."

* Looks like Caesar Rodney High grad Dave Williams' chances of winning the final spot in the Mets' rotation took a hit Wednesday when he underwent surgery to repair a herniated disc in his neck. According to the Mets, doctors won't be able to determine how soon he can resume baseball activities until an examination next week. Williams, a 27-year-old left-hander, is among a half-dozen candidates for the Mets' fifth-starter spot. The group also includes prospects Mike Pelfrey and Philip Humber and veteran Aaron Sele.
