Nov. 7 -- BREAKING NEWS: PHILS TRADE FOR LIDGE

For anyone who's still awake, the Phillies have just completed a trade with the Astros, acquiring closer Brad Lidge and utility infielder Eric Bruntlett for speedy outfielder Michael Bourn, reliever Geoff Geary and hit-or-miss third-base prospect Mike Costanzo.

Yes, this means Brett Myers is headed back to the starting rotation. (Posted this update on delawareonline.com).

Have to write -- quickly -- for the 50-center. MUCH more on this later tonight and tomorrow.

Now that's creative! I guess Myers goes back to the rotation and we have to be close to re-signing Rowand or acquiring another outfielder. Basically we just acquired the best starting pitcher on the market in the form of Brett Myers. Great move by Gillick.

While Lidge is always going to be a question mark after his closing performances of late, we acquired what should be a key piece and gave up very little in return. If Rowand resigns, a step in the right direction for Pat Gillick.

Great move here... thank goodness Eddie Wade is back in Major League Baseball! I would think this does point to a re-signing of Aaron Rowand as well as a return of Brett Myers to the rotation.

I like the Bruntlett pick-up as well... very scrappy utility player. Does anybody else remember the fact he was the guy who came in and pinch ran and stole all those bases off Billy Wagner in those fateful Phils-Astros games a few seasons back that helped cost us a playoff spot?

how can you definitively move myers back into the rotation with lidge closing? have you watched him these past couple of years? he blew like a 3rd of his chances this year. i like the move but i'm not sure how i feel about paying myers 9.5, gordon 9, and lidge presumably around 6-7 for the back end of our rotation--25+ mil for a trio of question marks.

This trade could really backfire. The only thing we have going for us is that Ed Wade was on the other end. Bourn could turn out to be another Lou Brock and easily steal 65 bases a year. If Lidge breaks down with injury this trade will suck.
