April 1 -- MOSEBACH RETURNS TO ANGELS

BY SCOTT LAUBER

TAMPA, Fla. -- In a perfect world, the Phillies would've sent strong-armed reliever Bobby Mosebach to triple-A and watched him continue to develop into a major-league pitcher.

That wasn't possible.

Mosebach, a 24-year-old right-hander, was acquired in the Rule 5 draft, and without getting too technical, that meant he had to remain on the Phillies' 25-man roster all season or be subject to waivers. And if he cleared waivers, he would have to be offered back to the Angels, his original team, for $25,000. Well, Mosebach cleared waivers today, but to the Phillies' chagrin, the Angels took him back.

"He'll be an Angel, unfortunately," Ruben Amaro Jr. said. "We tried to keep him with us, but they wanted him back. It's understandable. He's a good arm, and he's back in their system. Bobby did a nice job for us. We just felt like he was not going to be able to break camp with us at the major-league level."

Mosebach allowed eight hits, two walks and three strikeouts and posted a 9.39 ERA in 7-2/3 innings this spring.
