May 3 -- GORDON UPDATE

SAN FRANCISCO -- Sorry for the lack of bloggage today. I'll get back into the usual routine Friday, once my body gets used to the time difference. Right now, I'm still kind of confused. But, judging by the number of comments on the previous entry, you guys are keeping this blog fresh. Thanks, as always, for your input, and please keep it up!

Couple of news items:

* GM Pat Gillick met the team here today and said closer Tom Gordon (left) likely will be placed on the disabled list before tomorrow night's game. Gordon was diagnosed today with right shoulder inflammation. He received a cortisone shot and won't pitch for at least eight days. I think it'll be longer than that before we see Gordon pitch.

* Gillick denied any accusations that the Phillies misled people about Gordon's condition in spring training. Gillick said Gordon returned to Philadelphia on March 12 to have a cortisone shot in his elbow. He had a shot before last season, it worked, and he wanted to get another one, Gillick said. Simple as that. According to Gillick, the Phillies weren't aware that Gordon was feeling any stiffness until April 23, when his name showed up on the injury report submitted by trainer Scott Sheridan. That was three days after Gordon blew a save at Cincinnati.

* Shane Victorino is back in the lineup. Right-handed-hitting Wes Helms is not. Switch-hitting Abraham Nunez is starting at third base against right-hander Matt Cain.

* One note that won't make the $.50 edition tomorrow: RHP Tim Lincecum, the Giants' heralded pitching prospect, likely will make his major-league debut Sunday night against Phillies LHP Cole Hamels on ESPN.

* Finally, anyone else see the irony of Ryan Howard's first at-bat tonight? Howard got the Barry Bonds Treatment in the House That Bonds Built, which, by the way, is an absolutely stunning place, sort of like the rest of San Francisco. More on that tomorrow.
