May 4 -- GONE IN A FLASH

SAN FRANCISCO -- No surprise here: the Phillies have put Tom Gordon (left) on the disabled list with right shoulder inflammation. The move is backdated to May 2, which means Gordon is eligible to be activated May 17. But it doesn't sound like he'll be ready by then, especially if he won't begin throwing for another eight days.

In a slight upset, they replaced Gordon with Yoel Hernandez.

If you read today's 50-cent edition, you know all about Gordon's problems. Who's Yoel Hernandez, you ask? Well, before last season, he was one of the Phillies' top relief prospects. But he went on the DL last May 4, exactly a year ago, with a right shoulder strain and was shut down for the rest of the season. He's back on the prospect radar after posting a 3.68 ERA in nine games for triple-A Ottawa, including one hit in his last four innings and no runs in his last 6-1/3.

More in Saturday's paper, of course.
