June 28 -- BULLPEN BLUES

Don't tell Kyle Kendrick, but the Phillies won't score 10 runs every game. I know: that isn't what you, or Kendrick, want to hear.

Last night, the Phillies scored six runs, which should be enough to win most games. But after Jamie Moyer faltered in the seventh inning, five relievers couldn't hold a 3-0 lead or a 6-6 tie, and the Phillies lost to the Reds, 9-6. They'll need to be better this weekend. J.D. Durbin will make his Phillies debut tomorrow against the Mets, and J.A. Happ will make his major-league debut Saturday.

The Phillies have used 15 relievers, and it's not even the All-Star break. And the news isn't good on Brett Myers, who suffered a setback during a bullpen session Tuesday. Myers will play catch tomorrow and throw a bullpen Saturday, but the Phillies aren't expecting him back before the All-Star break. Tom Gordon throws a simulated game today, and fingers are crossed that he fares well. I'll post updates as they become available.

Meanwhile, you tell me, what should be the Phillies' priority: beefing up the bullpen or adding a proven starter to the rotation?

Both. Seriously.

Both the rotation and the pen are in need of help, and with the deadline approaching, the Phils should try to get the best arm available (remembering, of course, that they're a little light on prospects).

And if they manage to get a SP, they could always send him to the pen and make him a closer. That's a good idea, right?

they should do neither. they should sell at the deadline no matter where at in the standings they are. going out there every 4th and 5th day with a guy from AA and a guy from AAA will end up in no good. this team isn't as good as the dodgers/padres/diamondbacks. might as well get something for rowand/gordon(if back healthy)

Im usually on the other side of Jaime's arguments, but he may be onto something with the "sell" theory.

Of course, the glass is always half-empty in Philly. Countdown to 10K...

Jamie,

I have to disagree. It does seem likely that the WC will go to the West, but I think the Phils have a legitimate shot at the division. They score a ton of runs, despite the pitching problems (that's why they should try to make a trade). And the Mets' rotation isn't very good. They're pitching over their heads now, but that won't last. Atlanta has its problems as well.

That's not to say they shouldn't listen if a team wants to deal for Rowand, but not for prospects. 07 isn't over yet.

the mets get pedro back soon. if he pitches anywhere near what he's capable they have a great starting 5.

earlier int he year i thought they were pitching over their heads. but they've maintained it for almost half a season so far. not quite pitching over their heads. their defense behind them are still playing over their heads a little, but not too much.

i do not see them taking the division from the mets. they do score a lot of runs, but they let up a lot more runs than they score. their playing over their pythagorean record as well.
