June 8 -- FREDDY HURT

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Adding injury to the considerable insult of getting torched in the second inning tonight, reports from the Phillies' clubhouse are that Freddy Garcia has soreness in his right shoulder and will see team doctor Michael Ciccotti on Monday.

Doesn't sound good.

I'll have more in the 50-cent edition Saturday, so be sure to check that out.

Also, here's something that won't make your paper: triple-A reliever Joe Bisenius went on the disabled list today with right shoulder inflammation. In case you're counting, that means three of the Phils' top pitching prospects (Bisenius, Kyle Drabek and J.A. Happ) are on the DL in the minors.

he's probably had a bum shoulder all year. thats what happens when you don't give physicals to potential players.

such an inept organization.

According to Gillick, they gave The Chief numerous physicals before the trade went through and the doctors gave the organization the OK. The problem is that is arm is dead and has been for 2 years. He lost 5-7 MPH off his heater in Chicago and now he's down from 87-88 to 83. Hindsight is 20/20 but I'd sure like to have Gio Gonzalez back (not that worried about Gavin Floyd).

Jamie: The Phillies did, in fact, put Garcia through the usual medical rigors before completing the trade. From what I've heard, they were especially cautious because a) Garcia's velocity dropped last season with the White Sox and b) he has pitched A LOT of innings over the past six years. But their medical people -- and their scouts -- assured them Garcia was healthy.

To me, the blame rests just as much with the Phillies' baseball people, who didn't recognize the initial velocity drop as a harbinger of more serious problems.

t wasn't just that finish that gave the Phils confidence in making the deal. Amaro said the Phillies spoke with White Sox medical personnel about Garcia and reviewed the pitcher's health records. The Phillies did not order an MRI or physical exam before the deal.

"We didn't think it was necessary," Amaro said. "We consulted with their medical people, and nothing precluded us from making the deal, especially not with the comfort level we had with [White Sox general manager] Kenny Williams.

"With trades, it's buyer beware. It always has been. We felt comfortable enough with the information gathered from their medical people."

so, scott, did they really run him through the rigors of a heavy physical or what?

i don't understand this team.
