July 12 -- GORDON UPDATE

Tom Gordon's line last night in a rookie-level Gulf Coast League game -- 0.1 IP, 4 H, 5 R/ER, 1 BB -- was rather alarming, so I just spoke with assistant GM Ruben Amaro Jr. to get an update. There's good news and bad news.

The good: Gordon, out since May 1 with a strained rotator cuff, didn't suffer any physical setbacks.

The bad: Gordon had pretty lousy stuff. His velocity dropped, and his curveball wasn't particularly effective.

As a result, he'll pitch again tomorrow in the Gulf Coast League instead of joining the Phillies. There's a chance, if he pitches better, that he could rejoin the team over the weekend. But Amaro wouldn't project that far, preferring to focus more on Gordon's outing tomorrow.

Other updates: Amaro said Brett Myers' 25-pitch bullpen session yesterday in Clearwater was his best in a while. Myers will throw again Saturday in Clearwater. ... An MRI exam on the muscle strain above Carlos Ruiz's right knee revealed no structural damage. ... Jayson Werth has reported to Clearwater to continue his rehab from left wrist tendinitis.
