July 2 -- HOWARD'S IN

HOUSTON -- This just in: Ryan Howard will defend his Home Run Derby championship.

Howard, who wasn't picked to play in the All-Star Game on July 10 in San Francisco, said today he has accepted an invitation from Major League Baseball to compete in the Derby. Last season, Howard edged Mets third baseman David Wright in the contest at PNC Park in Pittsburgh.

"It was fun last year, and it's an honor to be invited back," Howard said a little while ago. "This year, you might have Barry Bonds. You might have Ken Griffey Jr. Prince [Fielder] probably will be in it. Maybe David Ortiz. Maybe Alex Rodriguez. Potentially having those guys as home-run derby guys, it's exciting."

Howard is sixth in the majors with 19 home runs, 13 since coming off the disabled list May 25. Phillies bullpen coach Ramon Henderson, who has pitched to the last two Derby champs (Bobby Abreu and Howard), will throw to Howard.

For what it's worth, Fielder already has committed to the Derby, but Bonds told reporters Sunday that he likely won't participate. Reigning AL MVP Justin Morneau is interested. Wright and Carlos Beltran are not.

Charlie Manuel said he wouldn't pick against Howard to repeat, but Howard warned that AT&T Park could be tough on left-handed hitters. The wind has been known to swirl off San Francisco Bay, beyond the right-field wall, so right-handers who pull the ball to left field may have the advantage.
