HOUSTON -- You could see this coming from a million miles away, but the Phillies announced a few hours ago that Jon Lieber will undergo season-ending surgery on the ruptured tendon in his right foot. The procedure will be performed Friday in Baltimore by Mark Myerson, the surgeon who previously operated on Pat Burrell and Terrell Owens, among others.As Lieber exits the Phillies' universe (he's a free agent and almost certainly won't be re-signed), Joe Savery enters. Savery, the Phillies' first-round pick and a Houston native, dropped by the clubhouse today and said he is close to signing. The left-hander from Rice University said, "I don't expect the negotiations to take too much longer. There's just a few kinks here and there to work out."
I participated in a draft-day conference call with Savery, but today was the first time I met him. He reminded me a lot of Cole Hamels. Ultra-confident. Savery said he expects to be pitching for Class A Lakewood by the end of the month and hopes to be with the Phillies by the latter portion of next season. Savery appeared very comfortable in the Phillies' clubhouse, and he already has a mutual acquaintance with Hamels. Savery's teammate at Rice, Scott Lonergan is from San Diego and attended Hamels' wedding last winter.*
One lineup note: Aaron Rowand is out tonight with a bruised right thumb. Fear not, though. It isn't considered serious. Talked to Rowand before batting practice, and he said he may be ready to play tomorrow. If not, by Friday in Colorado.

Will he make a stop in Williamsport or is he already ready for Lakewood?
Anon: Until he signs, the Phillies won't say where Savery is going to start. But I'd bet on him starting in Lakewood.
