Aug. 7 -- BLACK & BLUE CREW

Not to interrupt the ongoing discussion below about the Phillies' MVP (keep those great comments coming, by the way), but I wanted to pass along some injury updates provided by the team this afternoon:

Chase Utley (broken right hand)
He saw hand specialist Dr. Randall Culp today and had his stitches removed. He has not been cleared for gripping or hand exercises, but will continue his range-of-motion exercises. He'll see Culp again Aug. 20. Don't expect to see Utley much before Sept. 1.

Shane Victorino (strained right calf)
He began a running program yesterday and is scheduled to begin a minor-league rehab assigment this weekend.

Freddy Garcia (right shoulder strain)
Out since June 9, he threw a throw a bullpen session today in Clearwater, Fla. If all goes well, he will throw live batting practice on Aug. 10 in Clearwater.

Michael Bourn (sprained left ankle)
He saw team physician Dr. Michael Ciccotti yesterday and could begin a rehab assignment in 2-3 weeks.

Ryan Madson (strained right shoulder)
He'll be re-evaluated today, but he still won't throw for a week or two.

Scott Mathieson (elbow surgery)
After having Tommy John surgery last Sept. 29, he'll throw live batting practice Thursday and may begin a rehab assignment Aug. 12.

Rod Barajas (strained right groin)
He began a tossing and hitting program today and could be ready for a rehab assignment in one week. But with Chris Coste playing well and the Phillies carrying an extra reliever, it's possible Barajas won't be activated until Sept. 1 once rosters expand.

Jon Lieber (ruptured tendon in left foot)
Out since June 21, he saw foot specialist Dr. Norman Lichtenfeld last week and is cleared to begin a rehab program. Don't get excited. He's done for the season.
