Brett Myers struck out the side in the ninth inning last night.Then, he issued a plea for help.
These days, it seems every closer has an intro song. In New York, both Mariano Rivera and Billy Wagner use Metallica's "Enter Sandman." Appropriately, Jon Papelbon of the Red Sox uses "I'm Shipping Up To Boston" by the Dropkick Murphy's (great pick, by the way). In San Diego, Trevor Hoffman has AC/DC's "Hells Bells." Last weekend in Milwaukee, the Phillies had to endure Francisco Cordero's choice of Saliva's "Click, Click Boom." Seattle's J.J. Putz prefers "Thunderstruck" by AC/DC. And, of course, Tom "Flash" Gordon entered to Queen's "Flash" when he closed games last season.
Myers hasn't established a signature song yet, and that's where you come in.
A fan of hard rock, Myers has tried White Zombie's "Children of the Grave" and The Outlaws' "(Ghost) Riders in the Sky," but neither has caught on. Last night, when he entered the game, the fine folks who run the Bank's sound system chose K.C. & the Sunshine Band's "Shake Your Booty."
Myers, as you can imagine, was outraged.
"They need to do a poll in the paper to tell people to pick my dang song," he said.
OK, go ahead. I'll make sure Brett gets the results.

The focus of my game story last night was Kyle Lohse's performance, but it easily could've been the bullpen. Gordon looked good in the eighth, especially when he struck out Mike Jacobs on a 79-mph curveball, and Myers struck out the side in the ninth. If the Phillies can get those types of performances from Gordon and Myers, they'll be tough to beat whenever they have a lead after the seventh inning. And, with the Phillies' offense, they often will have a lead after the seventh inning.

Several Phillies players and manager Charlie Manuel are well-acquainted with Mike Bacsik, who will be remembered forever for giving up Barry Bonds' 756th homer.

Saw a comment in the "Story Chat" underneath the game story wondering about Jon Lieber's status. Lieber has been cleared to begin a rehab program (not a rehab start), but the road back from surgery is a long one. He won't pitch again this season.

The Phillies just acquired Russell Branyan from the Indians for cash considerations. Manuel likes to talk about Branyan's raw power from his days of managing him with the Indians. I'll have more on that later from the ballpark, but for now, you tell me: do you like the move? It strikes me as one of those low-risk, high-reward kind of things.

How about "Don't Panic" by Coldplay? If the Phils still have the lead when Myers comes in, that song is appropriate.
I like the Branyan move. I hope it spells the eventual exit of Barajas.
Since Myers is into heavier stuff, his song should be "Leper Messiah" by Metallica. They should start the song at 3:14 though. I can see the crowd getting behind that while also intimidating the opposing hitters.

I doubt any of these would be used, but they definitely get me pumped up.
My initial reaction to the Branyan acquisition was "Big deal." - he's a career .229 hitter who swings and misses a lot. Nothing to get excited about, really. If he can give us 5 homers late in games it'll go down as a palleteable acquisition, made more acceptable by the fact that we didn't have to weaken an already rather bleak farm to get Branyan.
I'd go with No More Mr. Nice Guy by Alice Cooper.
I think Takin Care of Business by BTO might also be appropriate and I think Lost Cause by Beck would be hilarious, but wouldn't be great for pump up music.
A ton of tidbits from last nights game.
- Any chance Scott, that you can ask Ruiz what he and Cabrera we're bickering about in the sixth? TV cameras showed a ton of jawing after Cabrera took one high and tight.
- Taylor Tankersley is a closer in waiting for another team.
- Did anyone see Kendrick toss a ball to a kid in the stands and hit him square on the head? Poor kid was bawling.
- Maybe Meyer's needs more rest. He was dominant in the second game when he threw only one ball out of some twenty pitches, and then last night it was the exact opposite.
- Maybe it was the rain though. I thought for sure that they were gonna call the the inning after Dobbs's double to tie it because it looked like a swimming pool by second and the mound looked clogged.
- He shouldnt come out to a song. Just applause.
