BY SCOTT LAUBERAccording to this morning's Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Braves are on the verge of signing free-agent right-hander Derek Lowe to a four-year, $60 million contract. Lowe, 35, had also drawn interest from the Mets, and earlier this offseason, from the Phillies. But the Phils re-signed Jamie Moyer, and the Mets may have to turn to their Plan B and re-sign erratic lefty Oliver Perez. Lowe, meanwhile, will step in and become the Braves' ace.
So, assuming the Mets re-sign Perez, who has the best rotation in the NL East?
Phillies: Cole Hamels, Brett Myers, Joe Blanton, Jamie Moyer, Chan Ho Park/J.A. Happ/Kyle Kendrick/Carlos Carrasco.
Mets: Johan Santana, Mike Pelfrey, John Maine, Oliver Perez, Tim Redding/Jon Niese .
Braves: Derek Lowe, Jair Jurrjens, Javier Vazquez, Kenshin Kawakami, Jo-Jo Reyes/Jorge Campillo.
Marlins: Ricky Nolasco, Josh Johnson, Chris Volstad, Anibal Sanchez, Andrew Miller.

The Marlins don't have a legit ace but are solid top to bottom. Phils and Mets are close but I am taking the Phils for three reasons: 1) Hamels can be better; Santana can't 2) Moyer is a wizard; Redding's dominance of us was a flash in the pan 3) I love the Phillies; I hate the Mets.
We needed Lowe!! That gives a veteran presence besides Moyer in the locker room and it takes the burden off of Myers and Hamels. Imagine rotation of 1.) Hamels,
2.) Lowe 3.) Myers 4.) Moyer 5.) Kendrick. That would be division winning team if they stay healthy. Then in the pen you have Park, Durbin and Condrey as long men. Madson, Eyre and JC [when he gets back] for te 7 & 8th innings then Lights out Lidge for the 9th! Thats a heck of pitching staff but now we can stop dreaming because Amoro [sp?] screwed up again.
