June 14 -- IBANEZ: GOTTA BE THE SHOES

BY SCOTT LAUBER

For the first time all season, Raul Ibanez wasn't in the Phillies' lineup today, ending his streak of 222 consecutive games played. And, as it turns out, it was more than just a routine day off.

Then again, maybe it wasn't.

After the game, Charlie Manuel said Ibanez has been bothered by a sore left Achilles because of an uncomfortable, new pair of spikes. Manuel noticed Ibanez was limping slightly Saturday night and said Ibanez will get "checked out tomorrow." Asked if he thought it was serious, Manuel said, "I hope not."

So, we asked Ibanez about it, and he seemed to think it was much ado about nothing.

"It's fine," Ibanez said. "[Athletic trainer] Scotty [Sheridan] cut [the shoes] for me, and now they're a lot better." Asked if he'll play Tuesday night against the Blue Jays, he said he will. "It was nothing at all. It was a day game, and we were done at 12:15 last night. By the time you get home, 1:30 or 2. It worked out OK."

Anyway, the whole thing made me think of those old Nike commercials with Spike Lee and Michael Jordan.
