Mar. 15 -- Day 31: EATON UPDATE

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Sorry for the lack of bloggage today. Been tapping away at a few stories for the Sunday paper. Anyway, just wanted to offer a quick Adam Eaton update ...

Facing a Twins lineup that included six regulars (Justin Morneau, Delmon Young, Carlos Gomez, Jason Kubel, Mike Lamb and Adam Everett), Eaton tossed three scoreless innings and reported no pain in his back or shoulder. He allowed five hits -- all singles and none that were particularly hard-hit -- and didn't walk a batter.

And, for the first time this spring, he inspired a shred of confidence that he can hold on to the No. 5 spot in the rotation.

"If I take the mound, I want my teammates to feel like, 'OK, we're going to get a win tonight,'" Eaton told us after leaving the game. "Last year, it was like, 'OK, what's he going to give us? Flip of a coin. What's it going to be?' They know what kind of pitcher I am. The excitement that I came with last year, If I'm healthy and ready to go this year, that excitement will be fulfilled."

*
Still no team meeting from Charlie Manuel, but it's coming. Phillies are down 5-2 right now and in danger of losing for the eighth time in nine games. But it's more than poor results that have Manuel upset. He wants the Phillies to start peaking as spring training nears its end.

Eaton's outing today wasn't the prettiest as far as allowing runners to reach base, but I was impressed with his 7 groundballs / 2 strikeouts.

It's a shame JD Durbin came in and blew it open though. Do you see Durbin being placed on waivers anytime soon? He should change his self-imposed nickname from "the real deal" to "deal or no deal"

Or how about just "No Deal" Zach?

Much has been debated about who should or shouldn't be the 5th starter, but Scott, am I wrong in pointing out that a 5th starter may not be needed very much or at all in April due to the schedule?

I think the focus should be getting off to a better start so we don't have to count on another Mets collapse come September.

Good to see Eaton come back strong, but I can't keep thinking this: Even a blind squirrel finds a nut now and then.
