Mar. 7 -- DAY 23: ROUGH DAY FOR CARRASCO

So, I was a guest on WIP's morning show today to discuss the Phillies, and near the end of the 10-minute segment, I mentioned how impressive Carlos Carrasco had been in his first two spring-training outings.

I must've jinxed him. My bad.

Carrasco had a rough time today against the Rays, allowing six runs on five hits and four walks (four walks!) in 1-2/3 innings of the Phillies' 9-1 loss. It was a reminder that he is 20 years old, has never pitched above double-A and needs more time in the minors before being considered for the Phillies' rotation. That said, with Adam Eaton and the Durbins (sounds like a bad '80s band, doesn't it?) struggling, the Phillies sure would love to see Carrasco in the majors at some point this season.

*
Rough third inning today for Cole Hamels, who allowed three runs, including a two-run double by Eric Hinske. Of course, you'll recall that Hamels had a rocky spring last year, too. He gave up nine homers in 20-2/3 innings and had a 6.10 ERA before winning 15 games during the season. So, clearly, spring training isn't much of a barometer for him.

*
Saturday is a big day in the race for the No. 5 starter spot. Eaton remains the frontrunner, but his back flared up yesterday. So, that opens the door for Rule 5 lefty Travis Blackley, who will start Saturday in Winter Haven against the Indians. Meanwhile, Kris Benson will pitch in a minor-league intra-squad game.

Darkhorse: Keep an eye on Francisco Rosario. He's coming off a strong winter-ball season in the Dominican Republic, pitching mostly as a starter. Assistant GM Mike Arbuckle told me recently that Rosario seems to pitch better as a starter than out of the bullpen.

With all due respect, this absolutely infuriates me. I suppose if we want to be fiscally responsible we have to start the bum that gets $7.5 million a year and admits he's stealing money. I suppose also that if we want to get past the first two innings without facing an enormous deficit we'd consider Blackley, Rosario, Carrasco(regardless of his poor outing today) or Benson as the front runner for the fifth starter spot. Afterall, how much greater of a deficit could these guys create than Eaton?

It is time to put Eaton on the shelf and let his bad back or whatever else is wrong with him heal.

No one on this roster could possibly be worse than Adam Eaton. We should option him to the minors. Seriously, can we option him to the minors? Why waste a spot on the 40 man roster on this bum? And if by some stroke of unbelievable luck another team claimed him would we get out of his horrible contract?

I'm pretty sure that Eaton wouldn't have options left. If anything, he can be DFA'd, and the Phils would still have to pay him unless they can trade him.
I actually think it's good that Carrasco got roughed up. I think he definitely needs at least another year in the minors before he's ready for the bigs. I also think that control was something he struggled with in making the jump to AA last year. Could be a confidence thing.
