Mar. 6 -- Day 22: EATON ROCKED ... AGAIN (UPDATED)

It's the Phillies' version of Groundhog Day.

Adam Eaton starts. Opposing team scores early, and often, in the first inning, putting the Phillies in a hole so big that not even their mighty offense always can escape.

And it happened again today.

After allowing a leadoff homer by Akinori Iwamura, Eaton gave up two more first-inning runs and another run in the second. Chad Durbin, Eaton's primary competition for the No. 5 starter job, tossed two scoreless innings before allowing a two-run homer by Carlos Pena in the fifth. Rays lead, 6-4, in the sixth despite two-run homers by Chris Coste and Chase Utley.

Kris Benson, who pitches in an intra-squad minor-league game Saturday, must be licking his chops.

(Update, 5:30 p.m.): In an interesting twist, Eaton said his lower back flared during today's start. It's a problem he has had since July (although he downplayed it earlier in the spring), and it may force him to miss his next start, Wednesday night against the Reds. Regardless, keep an eye on Rule 5 lefty Travis Blackley, who will start Saturday at Winter Haven against the Indians. Blackley hasn't allowed a run in two relief appearances, but this will be his first start. He was a starter throughout his minor-league career with Seattle and San Francisco.

K. Lohse at $4M/year sounds good to me.

Anybody wanna buy an Adam Eaton jersey with me and burn it ceremoniously?

Seriously, the day he's cut from the team is the day a huge weight is lifted off of the Phillies shoulders. He's putrid. Rotten. Cancerous.

Think of Adam Eaton as the big, puss-filled zit on your nose the night before prom that you're afraid to squeeze cuz you're afraid it'll bleed and form a scab.

That's the best analogy ever, is it not?

Blackley's looking pretty capable, and pretty much no matter who wins the job, they're just keeping the seat warm for Benson.

They should not give this guy a uniform.
