Feb. 14 -- DAY 1: GETTING TO KNOW YOU

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Well, the first workout is over, and everyone survived (as far as I can tell).

Most of the starters and relievers threw 40 pitches from bullpen mounds, and for a few of the battery combinations, it was a quick introduction. To wit: After catching a bullpen session, Pete Laforest shook right-hander Zack Segovia's hand and asked, "What's your first name?" Don't worry. I'm sure Segovia and Laforest will be better acquainted by the time they're teammates at triple-A Lehigh Valley in April.

Otherwise, it's been a fairly quiet day here. Position players don't start working out until next week, but several -- Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, Pat Burrell, Geoff Jenkins, Pedro Feliz and Greg Dobbs -- already are here. So far, no sign of Wes Helms, who may be traded during spring training. But Helms has a few more days before he has to show up. Kris Benson, by the way, is expected to arrive tomorrow. We'll bring you comments from Benson as soon as he (and maybe Anna, too?) arrives.

Time to start typing away for the 50-center. While I do that, tell me this: Of all the players in camp with the Phillies, who are you most interested in watching during spring training? My vote goes to sore-shouldered setup man Tom Gordon, with last year's surprise, Kyle Kendrick, a close second.

Oh, and before I forget, happy Valentine's Day everyone.

I think Eaton will be an interesting story. Nobody seems to really know if he's hampered by a recurring injury, or it's just between the ears. Either way, I have a hard time believeing the front office misjudged him so poorly when signing him. I've got to believe he's going to rebound this year...

My vote for most interesting to watch would be Kris Benson. Boy wouldn't it be nice to see this chance come through for the team!
Also, interesting to see the two Rule 5 pitchers and see if there is anything there as well.
