Feb. 4 -- BURRELL GETS HALL CALL

Pat Burrell has been elected to the Hall of Fame.

The University of Miami Hall of Fame.

Burrell was a big star at Miami. So big, in fact, that he was the No. 1 overall pick in the 1998 MLB draft. In three seasons, he set school records for batting average (.442) and slugging percentage (.886). He also ranks in Miami's all-time top five in home runs (61, 2nd), total bases (465, 2nd), RBIs (187, 5th) and walks (170, 4th). And he's the only Miami player to win the Golden Spikes Award, college baseball's version of the Heisman Trophy.

The
induction ceremony will be Feb. 13 in Miami, one day before the first workout for Phillies pitchers and catchers. Also among the eight inductees is Giants punter Jeff Feagles, who just had a pretty big night in Arizona.

The Phillies will have scouts in Atlanta tomorrow to watch Kris Benson's latest workout. I'm sure Benson wants a job before spring training starts, but would he be desperate enough to take a minor-league deal? Or would the Phillies be willing to spring for a one-year, incentive-filled contract? We'll find out soon enough.

Hopefully Burrell's award along with his second-half confidence from 2007 will translate to an impressive Spring Training instead of his 2007 campaign in which he batted only .237 in 23 games down in Florida. He's got it in him to really produce this year and I'm sure the phrase "walk year" has been echoing in his head for quite a while, although he likely won't have many suitors if he underachieves again in 08.

I'm curious to hear how his foot and wrist are holding up. It makes me wonder if he's made any changes to that "one-path swing" during the offseason.

Nine days until pitchers and catchers, Zach. Nine days, nine days, nine days...
