Feb. 22 -- MORE SIGNINGS

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Quick note before I head out to the field to watch my favorite pitchers vs. batters drill:

The Phillies have signed pitcher Kyle Kendrick, infielders Greg Dobbs and Brad Harman and outfielder T.J. Bohn to split contracts. Once again, a split contract means the player makes one salary (usually the major-league minimum) if he's in the majors and a lesser salary if he's in the minors. Kendrick and Dobbs probably don't have to fret over a lesser salary.

Still unsigned: Shane Victorino and Cole Hamels. It's worth noting that both will eligible for arbitration next year. Think the Ryan Howard verdict made them happy?

I thought Kendrick was traded to Japan?

Scott,
What do you think the going rate becomes for a speedy, maybe every day outfielder with plus range and arm and a 24 year old could-become-bonafide-ace this year lefty with a Santana-esque change? I don't know if I want to live in a world where the Shane Victorinos among us are making more than Jimmy Rollins--and is Cole going to fetch plus $10M? Eesh.

Hey SLauber, NY Post reports that Mets and Phillies are ready to rumble on the first meeting. Are the Phillies thinking of adding Dennis Bonvie, Brian McGrattan or Bill Goldthrope to the roster just in case? The field just may resemble the stands last year when the Phillies traveled to Shea in mid-September. Remember when the Philly fans had the living daylights kicked out them by drunken Met fans. That was a sight to see. Better than the game.

Well, jingles, if you're a big enough prick to say that fights between fans is better than the game on the field, you not only have a lot of growing up to do, but also probably belong somewhere other than a baseball game. Maybe in a kennel with a muzzle on would be somewhere more appropriate.

"Fans" like you give baseball a bad name. Then again, you're not much different than any other typical Muts fan.

Anyways. Scott, don't you become a little bit weighed down by the lack of news during spring training? And don't you think that these predictions are getting a bit out-of-hand? I read that Ryan Dempster thinks the Cubs are going to win the World Series. Beltran's comments, Jimmy's annual address, and now even Chipper Jones getting in on it? This is just ridiculous. I realize hope springs eternal at Spring Training, but give us something we want to read. Give me info on what's said after Ryan Howard gets his knees broken by a Cole Hamels change-up. Give me Shane Victorino pie-in-the-face stuff. Loosey-goosey, glass-half-full, this is still a game kind of stuff.

Oh, excuse me. Baseball is pure as driven snow. Get real, bud. And I guess Phillies fans turn away when things turn ugly at Citizens Park. Yea. And the Pope's Jewish.

I don't understand the engine the drives you arrogant pricks to say half of the things you do. Get over your little middle school sense of entitlement.

Jingles: Saw that report in the NY Post, and quite frankly, I have no idea where it came from. No Phillies players have said anything to me about brawling with the Mets. I wouldn't put any stock in that report. But, just in case, I'm glad I have experience covering hockey!

cifuentj: Hard to say what the going rate will be for Victorino and Hamels. But I guarantee the Phillies will try to reach settlements with both rather than going to a hearing. Can't see Hamels fetching $10 million, though. Not unless he wins 20 and a Cy Young, and even then, I can't see him getting eight figures in his first arbitration go-around. The Howard decision was historic, but Howard also has historic numbers for a player with less than three full seasons of service.

Bertmurr: The verbal back-and-forth between the Phillies and Mets definitely has gotten monotonous. Personally, I'm looking forward to April 8 at Shea when things are decided on the field.
