June 25 -- BENSON UPDATE

Almost forgot that Kris Benson pitched again last night for Class A Clearwater.

His line: 4.2 innings, 7 hits, 1 run, 0 walks, 3 strikeouts

Benson gave up a hit in every inning but the fourth and suffered his second loss in as many minor-league starts. But as long as he feels good today and pitches again in five days, the Phillies won't worry too much about the results.

Not yet, at least.

While we focus on starting pitchers who may be available at the trade deadline, heard the other day that the Phils are interested in Rockies lefty reliever Brian Fuentes, who has a 2.05 ERA and 13 saves in 16 chances.

Makes perfect sense, actually. Fuentes would give the Phils another lefty in the bullpen, and he'd slide into the setup role, alleviating the burden on sore-shouldered Tom Gordon. Before the series in St. Louis a few weekends ago, Charlie Manuel said he's going to lighten Gordon's workload. Gordon hasn't pitched since June 15 because of a sore shoulder.

why get fuentes? charlie won't use him. he rather let his starters go 'late' into games just so they can give the game away. whats wrong with 1 run in 6 innings and having the best bullpen in the NL take over from there?

Jamie: I assume you're referring to last night's game, when Charlie left Moyer in the game to face Emil Brown in the seventh. As I wrote in another post today, it's hard to fault Charlie for that move. Moyer was brilliant for six innings. He hadn't allowed a hit since Suzuki's leadoff single in the first.

I can see the argument -- Durbin has been tough against right-handers, and Moyer's pitch count was creeping toward 100. But, given the way Moyer had been pitching to that point, I think it's hard to kill Charlie for that move.

not just limited to moyer. dudes 45 and doesn't pitch well when around 100 pitches.

how about when he leaves myers in to the 8th inning? or the same with eaton? it appears the only short hook he has is with kendrick. the guy who might have the best chance of going late and getting out of jams.

he's even left hamels in late in the game for no good reason when he's over 100 pitches.

USE THE BULLPEN YOU HAVE. THEY ARE GOOD(sans gordon)
