July 24 -- ROLLINS WAS LATE

NEW YORK -- Just got back upstairs to my computer after some time in the clubhouse, and, as you probably know, Jimmy Rollins was benched today because he was approximately one hour late to Shea Stadium. The Phillies were told to report to the clubhouse by about 10 a.m. for the 12:10 p.m. start. Rollins, who said he got caught in traffic, didn't arrive until a few minutes after 11 a.m.

"That's one of our rules -- hustle and be on time," Charlie Manuel said.

Rollins now has broken both. On June 5, he was pulled out of a game because he didn't hustle on a pop fly to shallow left field.

Manuel met with Rollins before the game. Rollins said he didn't agree with Manuel's decision to replace him in the lineup with Eric Bruntlett, who, by the way, had three hits.

"Just a little too late," Rollins said. "Can't change the lights. We're not going to agree on this one. I agreed with him last time. He's the manager. He has to set a precedent with certain players. That's fine."

Much more on this later and tomorrow in The News Journal.

It's time for Rollins to grow up and stop holding himself to such a high standard. The only fitting word to describe his demeanor this year would be "lackadaisical," and it must be having an effect on the entire clubhouse.

After the nearly unfathomable number of injuries sustained by this roster in 2007, you'd think that the right steps would be taken to ensure victory in 2008 when there has barely been an injury to speak of aside from Rollins' ankle sprain. Aside from the ninth inning comeback the other night, this team just acts like they don't care.

It's the second half. Time for the players to stop claiming themselves to be a second-half team and actually put forth some effort. The Phillies seem to be turning into the Mets of two months ago -- a team full of underachievers surrounded by off-field distractions.

But hey, there's always tomorrow, right?

nah, that's not true. I can think of a lot of other "words" to decribe him. none that I think TNJ would print, mind you, but there ARE other words.

A player is only benched if he doesn't play the entire game. Rollins pinch hit in the top of the 9th for a fielders choice to end the game. If Rollins truly did say what you have reported than his butt should be benched for a week. What is wrong with him? What is causing all of these issues? There is SOMETHING going on behind the scenes. There has to be!

I agree with Mike, there is something going on that we don't know about. Jimmy's head is clearly somewhere else right now. Also, I don't think people would care as much if he was hitting .320
