April 1 -- FINAL ROSTER ... ALMOST

After today's workout, the Phillies submitted their roster for Opening Day. The roster included only 24 players, one fewer than the maximum allotted. The reason: Well, the Phillies still are looking for another reliever, and they wanted to hold a space in case they can complete an 11th-hour trade or pick someone off waivers. RHP Francisco Rosario, a hard-thrower who the Phillies scouted last week, was designated for assignment by the Blue Jays. Also, in a surprise move, RHP Dustin Hermanson was designed for assignment by the Reds. Also, the Phillies are keeping RHP Joe Bisenius close by. They'd rather have Bisenius start the season at Triple-A Ottawa, but if they're unable to acquire another reliever, they could put Bisenius on the Opening Day roster.

As expected, RHP Freddy Garcia (right biceps tendinitis), RHP Jon Lieber (strained right oblique), C/INF Chris Coste (strained right hamstring) and C Ryan Budde (strained left oblique) started the season on the disabled list. Garcia will throw a bullpen session today, then make a rehab start Thursday in the season-opener for Single-A Clearwater. After that, he'll start an April 10 game for Clearwater. If that goes well, he may be ready to return to the Phillies for an April 15 start against the Astros at Citizens Bank Park. While Garcia is rehabbing, RHP Zack Segovia will take his spot in the rotation. More on Segovia in a later post.

Here's the Phillies opening-day roster, as it stands now:

Starting pitchers: RHP Brett Myers, LHP Cole Hamels, RHP Adam Eaton, LHP Jamie Moyer, RHP Zack Segovia.

Relief pitchers: RHP Tom Gordon, RHP Ryan Madson, RHP Antonio Alfonseca, RHP Geoff Geary, LHP Matt Smith, RHP Clay Condrey.
