April 1 -- NO APRIL FOOL

When RHP Zack Segovia arrived at Citizens Bank Park this morning, he was summoned into manager Charlie Manuel's office. Right away, Segovia thought the worst: One day before the season-opener, after flying his wife, parents and in-laws to Philadelphia, he feared he was being sent to Triple-A. "You walk in," Segovia said, "and already you have a bad feeling. I didn't think it was going to be the good talk."

Segovia entered the room and saw Manuel, pitching coach Rich Dubee, GM Pat Gillick and assistant GM Ruben Amaro Jr. Initially, Dubee grilled Segovia about twice walking Devil Rays 1B Hee-Seop Choi in a minor-league spring training game Saturday in Florida. Segovia explained that he was working on his changeup, but Dubee seemed unimpressed by the explanation. "I thought that was going to be the nail in my coffin," Segovia said. "They were like, 'Are we going to be able to trust him with that brain?"

Then, Gillick uttered the words Segovia wanted hear.

He made the team.

Segovia may not stay with the Phillies for long. He'll take RHP Freddy Garcia's spot in the starting rotation and may make his major-league debut Saturday or Sunday at Florida. That would be the perfect birthday present for Segovia, who turns 24 on April 11. But he has never pitched above Double-A, and when Garcia returns from right biceps tendinitis, there's a good chance Segovia will be sent to Triple-A Ottawa.

But, all he cares about today is that his family will get to see him announced with the rest of the Phillies on Opening Day. "I'm here today, and I'm going to be here tomorrow," he said. "That's the most important day. I'm going to be here hopefully for a while."
