April 7 -- WOE CANADA!

Walked into the Phillies' clubhouse here tonight after the 8-5 loss to Florida and saw Ryan Howard, Shane Victorino, even Jimmy Rollins sitting at a table and eating dinner in complete silence. Howard stared straight ahead, seemingly in a trance. You would've thought the Phillies had just lost a World Series game, not the fifth game of the season.

Then came the news that the Phils have optioned C/INF Chris Coste (left) to Class AAA Ottawa. Coste, who became a fan favorite last season after batting .328 as a 33-year-old rookie, strained his right hamstring during spring training and opened the season on the disabled list. He went 4-for-10 with an RBI double in a three-game rehab assignment for Class A Clearwater, but the Phillies decided to keep speedy OF Michael Bourn in the majors rather than Coste. While the move must've been immensely disappointing to Coste, who toiled in the minors for 11 years before finally reaching the majors, the guess here is we'll see him at some point during the season if the Phillies encounter an injury. Also, the Phillies may be able to use Coste as trade bait. Either way, it would be a shame if he doesn't get another chance in the majors, especially after having such a good season last year.

There's a postgame American Idol concert going on at Dolphin Stadium, and since I'm hardly a fan of the show (I really don't understand the obsession with it), I'm heading out of here. More tomorrow before and after Zack Segovia's major-league debut, a game the Phils need to win to avoid a 1-5 start for the third time in four years.
