April 26 -- HISTORY IN PHILLY?

A few minutes after the Phillies' clubhouse opened to the media after last night's game, Randy Wolf served up Barry Bonds' 741st home run. So, I did some quick math and figured out that Bonds has seven homers in the Giants' first 19 games. If he continues at his current pace and doesn't miss another game (both unlikely), he'll at least tie Hank Aaron's mark during the Giants' visit to the Bank on June 1-4.

Then again, it's hard to imagine Barry tying or breaking the record in Philly, given the reputation of the fans here. Actually, it's hard to see him breaking it anywhere but San Francisco, the one place where he seems to be beloved. I'll be there next weekend, and I'm curious to get a firsthand look at the reaction he gets from the locals.

Phillies-Nationals are about to get underway. No surprises in the Phillies' lineup. Rod Barajas, who caught Cole Hamels' 15-strikeout game last Saturday, is back behind the plate again today.

More later.

Let's hope if he has a chance to do it here, someone with some guts on the Phillies staff will lay him out with a fastball to the face.

As a Philadelphia-grown Phillies fan living in San Francisco, I can tell you that this /is/ the one place Bonds is beloved. The blind-eye Giants fans have turned to Bonds' attitude and antics is pretty unbelievable.

I've had many discussions about Bonds with co-workers who are Giants fans, and the one question that (very temporarily) gets them to reconsider their God is "How would you feel about Bonds if he were a Dodger?"

Enjoy your trip. It's a beautiful park, and this time of year should yield great weather for this series. I'll be at all 4 games, cheering on the Phils and booing Bonds.

Jamie,

Bonds is absolutely a great batter. One of the best. No one here as disputed that. It's a shame though, that such a great batter is also a despicable human being.

Fletch: Thanks for the comment. It's great to get the Bay Area perspective. We don't hear that enough around here. Speaking of which, would you mind e-mailing me your name and contact information (slauber@delawareonline.com)? When I'm in San Francisco, I'll be working on a story about how the Giants fans feel about Bonds, and I'd love to get more of your thoughts.

Thanks, and please keep the comments coming!

Fletch: baseball is LITTERED with terrible human beings. nothing i can do about it. so i take it for face value and give him credit as a player. i wish i was older to really appreciate what he was doing in the early to mid 90's.
