April 5 -- HANGIN' WITH DAVE ...

On Tuesday, when the Phillies and Mets take a day off from their three-game series at Shea Stadium, Ryan Howard will be a guest on The Late Show With David Letterman. Typically, when athletes appear on the show, Dave has them do stunts related to their sport. For instance, he had New York Jets kicker Mike Nugent boot balls through the window of an office building and he went out to the street last year to pitch to New York Yankees leadoff man Johnny Damon. No word yet on whether Howard will be involved in any outdoor home-run hitting contest.

Regardless, it's another indication of how high Howard's star is rising. Letterman usually hosts only the highest-profile athletes. Recent athletes to appear include LeBron James, Peyton Manning and New York Mets third baseman David Wright. Howard has a bubbly personality and a booming laugh, so the guess here is he'll be a hit.
