April 18 -- HOWARD HURT

WASHINGTON -- Just when you thought things couldn't get any worse for the Phillies, there was Ryan Howard, sitting in the trainer's room after tonight's game, with a left quad injury that may prevent him from playing Thursday. Howard is expected to undergo an MRI exam before Thursday's game, according to manager Charlie Manuel.

Howard didn't make himself available to reporters who wanted to inquire about the degree to which he was injured. He stayed in the game after getting hurt in the 10th inning while legging out a fielder's choice. Then again, he didn't have much of a choice. The Phillies were out of position players, and the game lasted 13 innings.

Hopefully, I'll have more information tomorrow.

Couldn't one of the pitchers come in to play 1B or LF? How about Moyer? He certainly wouldn't have pitched that night and he was at the park still. Hamels? He pinch hit an inning later.

I'd rather have a pitcher play the field than an injured Howard out there possibly making his injury worse putting him out longer.

Lawyer: Asked Charlie Manuel about it and he said he was considering using a pitcher at first base, if Howard was unable to keep playing. But Howard said his leg didn't stiffen up until after the game. In fact, one inning after getting hurt, he ran well to cover first base on a grounder.

Thanks for the note. Please keep 'em coming!
