April 26 -- CASTRO IN, SMITH OUT

Looks like it was more than a hunch.

Just got word that the Phillies have optioned Matt Smith (right) to triple-A Ottawa and recalled left-hander Fabio Castro (left). Castro was 2-0 with a 3.24 ERA, seven strikeouts and five walks in 8-1/3 innings.

Phillies clubhouse will open to the media in a few minutes, so I'll try to get some reaction to the move before the game.

Any idea why the Phils chose to bring up Castro instead of James Happ?

I am stumped as to why the Phils didn't try to acquire Rincon or Villone when they were available. It's as if they don't consider a LH reliever all that important. Rather strange considering the Mets are loaded with lefties power hitters.

Supersport: Happ is projected as a future member of the starting rotation. So, the Phillies don't want to stunt his development by bringing him up to be a reliever. Although Castro was a starter in winter ball, he has been pitching out of the bullpen for Ottawa.

Anonymous: The Phillies don't think Rincon or Villone have much left to offer. Charlie Manuel managed Rincon in Cleveland, and he doesn't seem to think Rincon is the same pitcher now. Some scouts who watched him in spring training have told me they agree with that assessment.
