Aug. 22 -- LINEUP CHANGES

Charlie Manuel changed up the lineup slightly for tonight's series-opener against the Dodgers. Here's what we've got: SS Jimmy Rollins, 2B Chase Utley, LF Pat Burrell, 1B Ryan Howard, CF Shane Victorino, 3B Greg Dobbs, RF Geoff Jenkins, C Chris Coste, RHP Kyle Kendrick.

More on that later.

That's definitely better. Burrell batting before Jenkins, Feliz, and Ruiz has absolutely killed our run scoring.

Burrell might not be fast, but he gets on base more than anyone. even with his .387 OBP and 29 HRs, he only has 61 runs scored. Burrell only gets knocked 19% of the time that he's on base without homering, as compared with the rest of the team's 30%.

That's ridiculous, and it's about time Manuel stopped being obsessed with speed and put him in front of at least Howard.

The bases have been empty for 55% of Howard's homeruns-- about the team average, which is ridiculous for a cleanup hitter. His batting average on balls in play his .323 with a runner on first, and .249 otherwise.

It's Run Scoring 101. The guys who get on base a lot should bat right before the guys who get a lot of extra base hits.

This also splits up the lefties, making us less vulernable to late inning relievers.

I really should be the manager. I'm qualified

I concur Matt; you should manage the club.

Honestly, I couldn't have said it better myself. I've been dying for Good Time Charlie to roll out a lineup like this all season - with the exception of Jenkins starting, as I've always been a big fan of Werth since his days in Los Angeles.

Speed at the top of a lineup is great, but you have to consider the overall offensive production of the team before the, trite, conventional wisdom.

I didn't write the second MattS comment. That's the third time someone has done that. I'm adding the blog I'm part of to my signature so at least if this guy keeps copying me, at least we get some traffic.

Then again, maybe one of my friends wrote it for me.
