Aug. 7 -- BREAKING: PHILS TRADE FOR EYRE

This just in ...

The Phillies have acquired lefty reliever Scott Eyre from the Cubs for single-A right-hander Brian Schlitter. Eyre, 36, will give the Phils a second true lefty reliever in their bullpen after J.C. Romero. Recently, the Phillies recalled lefties J.A. Happ and Les Walrond, both starters by trade, from triple-A Lehigh Valley. Neither were effective in relief appearances Tuesday night, and one of them figures to be sent back to make room for Eyre.

About Eyre: He was designated for assignment Tuesday after the Cubs activated Kerry Wood. He was 2-0 with a 7.14 ERA and 14 strikeouts in 11-1/3 innings in 19 appearances for the Cubs, but his season has been interrupted by separate disabled-list stints for left elbow inflammation and a groin strain. He didn't allow a run in his first 14 appearances (nine innings), and against NL teams, he's 2-0 with a 3.24 ERA. Six of the nine earned runs he has allowed have been against AL teams.

Eyre has held left-handed hitters to a .259 (7-for-27) average this season and .244 (214-for-877) for his career. Since 2004, he has appeared in 317 games, the fourth-highest total among major league left-handed pitchers. The Cubs signed Eyre to a three-year, $11 million contract before the 2006 season. He has approximately $1 million left on his contract.

The Phillies expect Eyre to join the team tomorrow. At that time, they'll make a roster move.
