Aug. 6 -- BREAKING: GORDON INJURED

Tom Gordon was pitching to his second batter in the first inning tonight for single-A Clearwater when he walked off the mound with an elbow problem. At this point, that's about all we know.

"He threw a pitch and felt something in his elbow and left the game," said assistant GM Mike Arbuckle, who is attending the game in Lakeland, Fla. "Obviously, it's something our medical people will have to look at and examine. Other than that, I can't tell you anything more."

Gordon, the Phillies' 40-year-old setup man, was making his second rehab appearance as he tries to come back from right elbow inflammation. He got Justin Justice to ground out to second base before suffering his setback while pitching to Louis Ott, who eventually walked.

More later.

(Update, 8 p.m.): The Phillies just announced in the press box that Gordon has been diagnosed with right elbow discomfort. He will fly here tomorrow and be examined by team physician Dr. Michael Ciccotti.
