Oct. 12 -- California dreamin'

By MARTIN FRANK

Our hotel the first night here in LA was about 1 1/2 miles from the Santa Anita Racetrack, where Seabiscuit trained and won some of his greatest races in the 1930s. I went for an early-morning run past the track. I got in through the gates, and ran up close to the track, where several horses were doing their workouts. Then I continued on, the mountains looming just past the track. It was a crystal-clear blue sky, and the track, surrounded by the mountains looked just like a postcard.

It was probably the easiest 7 miles I have ever run. I wouldn't have minded watching a few races, but alas, had to head to the ballpark.

Anyway, back to baseball. The Phillies are currently taking batting practice, and that, too, is one of those postcard moments, the clear blue sky and the mountains in the background. Dodger Stadium is almost 50 years old, and yet no one ever talks about tearing it down and replacing it with one of those new ballparks. They got it right when they built it, up on a hill, and it has more than withstood the test of time, unlike just about every other park. It is easily one of my favorite ballparks.

That's it for now. Lauber should have more information for you all later.
