Oct. 10 -- JUNE MANUEL (1921-2008) ... UPDATED

BY SCOTT LAUBER

Just got to the Bank, and word is spreading through the press box that Charlie Manuel's mother, June Manuel, has passed away in Buena Vista, Va.

She was 87 years old.

Charlie was scheduled to be in the interview room at 1:15, but that has been canceled. Right now, as I look down at the field, Charlie is standing alone at the batting cage. The Phillies are stretching. They will take batting practice in a bit. No word yet on whether Manuel will manage today.

We'll have more as it becomes available.

(Update, 1:16 p.m.): The above photo, circa 2005, is from MLB.com.

(Update, 3 p.m.): According to a team spokesman, Manuel will manage the Phillies today. He was on the field throughout batting practice. The spokesman said Charlie learned of his mom's death while in his office this morning after a meeting with his coaches. The Phillies will fly to Los Angeles after today's game. It's unknown if Charlie will be on that flight. June Manuel was rushed to Roanoke Memorial Hospital earlier this week after suffering a heart attack.

June Manuel is survived by 10 children. Funeral arrangements are pending.

(Updated, 5:17 p.m.): The Phillies just released a statement from team president David Montgomery: "The Phillies organization is saddened by the news of the death of June Manuel, the mother of our manager. Our hearts go out to Charlie and the Manuel family at this most difficult time. Mrs. Manuel instilled the qualities of hard work, loyalty and a caring good nature that we have come to respect and appreciate from our manager and our friend."

Sad news indeed. I hope the entire city extends their condolences to Charlie. I know I will.

Even more incentive to win this afternoon.
