Oct. 5 -- ABOVE-AVERAGE JOE

BY SCOTT LAUBER

MILWAUKEE -- This is why the Phillies got Joe Blanton.

Through five innings, Blanton has allowed only two hits (both singles), struck out five and hasn't walked a batter. It's reminiscent of his start Aug. 2 in St. Louis when he was positively spectacular for seven innings against the Cardinals. He has thrown 81 pitches, so it's doubtful Charlie Manuel will be able to turn to the Brewers fan who hollered at him before the game and boast that he didn't have to make any pitching changes. But Blanton is showing the potential that made him so attractive to the Phillies in July when they acquired him from the A's for prospects Adrian Cardenas and Josh Outman.

Still 5-0, Phillies, end of 5.
