Oct. 4 -- IN-GAME: WAS WERTH THE RIGHT CHOICE?

BY SCOTT LAUBER

MILWAUKEE -- The other day, during Game 1 of the NL Division Series, I turned to News Journal columnist Kevin Noonan and said that Jayson Werth shouldn't be starting against right-handed pitching. Werth finished the season in a 5-for-35 slump and went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in Game 1 against Brewers right-hander Yovani Gallardo and a few relievers.

Before Game 2, Charlie Manuel said he was thinking of sitting Werth, and starting either lefty-swinging Geoff Jenkins or Matt Stairs, in Game 3 or 4 against Brewers right-handers Dave Bush and Jeff Suppan. But Werth recorded two doubles (against lefty CC Sabathia) in Game 2, so he's back in the lineup tonight.

So far, Werth, who said he identified a mechanical flaw in his swing before Game 2, had looked awful on two strikeouts. If there's a Game 4, perhaps Manuel will go with Jenkins or Stairs. It would be the smart move.
