Mar. 19 -- HAMELS, PARK, UTLEY UPDATES

BY SCOTT LAUBER

JUPITER, Fla. -- Just chatted with Ruben Amaro Jr., who is with the team here but brings us this long-distance update on Cole Hamels:

Hamels played catch with Jamie Moyer from 150 feet off flat ground and reported no problems with his cranky left elbow. The true test, though, will be tomorrow, when Hamels wakes up and sees how his elbow responds. If everything is OK, he'll play catch again tomorrow, and if that goes well, pitching coach Rich Dubee said Hamels could throw a bullpen session off a mound Saturday.

"Today was a good sign," Amaro said. "We'll know more as he progresses. We'll take it a day at a time."

***
RHP Chan Ho Park didn't make the trip because he has a sore left hamstring, Amaro said. But Park threw off a mound today, according to Dubee, and if he responds well tomorrow, he will make his scheduled start Saturday at Bright House.

***
Chase Utley isn't in the lineup today, but no need for concern. Just a routine day off after he played two straight days. Utley is on the trip and likely will start tomorrow against the Cardinals here at Roger Dean Stadium. (Still not sure who Roger Dean is/was, but if you're curious, we'll try to find out.)

***
After the Puerto Rican team was eliminated from the World Baseball Classic, J.C Romero has reported back to Clearwater and will work out there tomorrow.

Stay tuned for more.

If Philly is looking for some pitching help, I hear Grant Roberts may be available, and he's value-priced too. That would be a "smokin'" deal for Philly.
