Mar. 1 -- VIDEO: MAYBERRY IMPRESSES PHILS

BY SCOTT LAUBER

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- So, after arriving here a few weeks ago, I phoned John Mayberry and wrote about him and his son, who is in spring training with the Phils. I knew Mayberry was a power hitter in his day. He hit 255 homers in a 15-year career spent mostly with Kansas City and Toronto. But I didn't know much about John Jr., a big (6-foot-6, 230 pounds), strong 25-year-old outfielder with plenty of potential.

Sure enough, John Jr. has been one of the most impressive players in camp.

After watching him hit a line-drive homer into the left-field bleachers yesterday against the Rays, I asked Charlie Manuel if Mayberry could be the right-handed power bat off the bench that the Phillies have been seeking. Manuel said it's still too early to tell, but clearly, Mayberry is opening eyes around here. He'll be worth watching throughout the rest of the spring.
